The environment, after all, is where we all meet, where we all have a mutual interest. It is one thing that all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become. - Lady Bird Johnson

In 2005, the Indian River Land Trust completed a study of environmentally sensitive lands in Indian River County, the result of which is the Greenprint for the Future. The project was funded through a private foundation grant and the generous contributions of individuals within the Indian River County community. Working with CivaTerra computer mapping services and ecological researcher, Dr. David Cox, IRLT produced a map of the county's most important resources in need of protection - Native Habitat/Wetlands and Agricultural Lands.

The Greenprint map was presented to the County Commission in May 2005 and became an official reference source for county staff as they work through growth management issues, particularly as they relate to ensuring a healthy balance of wildlife habitat, agricultural areas, recreational corridors and rural quality of life found in few Florida communities today.

The Greenprint map continues to be updated, reflecting the progress being made by both the Indian River Land Trust and Indian River County conservation efforts.
